Fortunately that single player story is very good, debatably one of the best RPG stories ever written. Which is all to say, yes, it's as good a single player game as any Final Fantasy. There just happens to be an MMO attached to it.
FFXIV is an RPG before it's an MMO. It's completely doable solo especially for questing/story content. Even a lot of the dungeon content you can do solo with NPCs in place of real players. Even when forced to do a dungeons, trials, and such you can fill the party with NPCs if youd rather not with people.
