The Brief NHL History of 69
According to Hockey Reference, only two players have worn sweater number 69. The first player to don the number was Mel Angelstad with the Washington Capitals in the 2003-04 season. Angelstad, who was called “Mad Mel” chose 69 because of the obvious connotations.The number 0 was made legal in 2022, although it remains banned as the first digit of a two-digit number. In forms of the game that have fewer than 11 men (most notably eight-man football and six-man football) a player can wear any number.
In 2021, rules changes led to greater flexibility with uniform numbers, but it wasn't until this spring that the NFL finally brought back No. 0 for everyone but offensive and defensive linemen.
