The Demon Hunters succeed and return to Outland, only to find Illidan has been slain; the Hunters are consequently imprisoned with Illidan's corpse in the Vault of the Wardens.A struggle for Illidan's soul ensued between the Legion and the forces of Azeroth, including the remaining Illidari, culminating in Illidan's resurrection atop the Nighthold.Basically Maiev, her usual crazy self, took Illidan's body back to the Vault of the Wardens. Where Gul'dan broke in, used the standard "no demon dies outside the nether" logic to revive him, and then made his escape. Then the Wardens hit the "panic button" and released the player Demon Hunters.
Did Illidan die against Arthas : After a few minutes of exchanging blows, however, Arthas overcame Illidan's defenses and cut him down. Illidan Stormrage was badly wounded, but not killed. After it became clear for Vashj and Kael that they could not destroy the Frozen Throne, they retreated, eventually back to Outland, taking Illidan with them.

But when Illidan kills Gul'dan, Gul'dan is so insignificant to him that Illidan can't even be bothered to taunt him or say anything, just explodes him. Illidan's sights are set on the real goal, the demon lords, and Gul'dan is just a bug to be quashed on the way to them.
